GERD Prevention

Do you have Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)? Well if you do there are some things you can do to prevent the symptoms of GERD. Some of those are simple lifestyle changes. One is elevating the head of your bed at least 6 inches. You can place blocks under the head of the mattress or use a foam wedge under the head portion of the mattress. Some foods cause the esophageal sphincter to relax while they are being digested. The foods to avoid are: coffee, carbonated beverages, chocolate, fatty foods, whole milk, peppermint and spearmint. Limit acidic foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes. You should eat smaller meals and should not lie down after eating. Try very hard not to eat 3-4 hours before going to bed. Smoking makes the symptoms worse. You should avoid drinking alcohol. Obesity is another factor that can make symptoms worse. Avoid wearing tight-fitting garments because they can put pressure on the abdomen.
